Quite a promininent article in last Tuesday's Daily Mail about the dangers of continuing use of Internet Explorer in WindowsXP. The article states that a corrupted Adobe Flash file is used to gain access and then run a programme in Internet Explorer to get the confidential data. One of the safeguards recommended is that the Flush pluging be disabled. The article continues with a "prediction" that several hundred million computers will be scrapped for more up to date hardware by the end of the year. That sounds like a marketing scam to me! Why scrap a computer that works well, when it is dead easy to buy, say, Win7 for approximately £99; format the HD are install Win7!
I have not used Internet Explorer for years, but it is on my WinXP. Just wondering if the system would continue to work if I uninstalled Internet Explorer. Are there any other applications that I minght lose? I use Outlook, for instance and would like to keep it. I tried to disable Adobe Flash plugin in my IE, but could not find it. Any idea how to do that?

It wasn't just XP it was all versions of Windows, the fault was in IE. Its probably been there for 15 years and nobody had ever exploited it. However they have issued an update and fixed it, the update is available for XP as well. Microsoft ignored their, "No more support for XP," in this case.

I take most these these things with the same pinch, alexham. I use Chrome in any case. There seems little doubt that many computers will be scrapped, but equally, many will continue in service simply because they work. When I was still working for a living, much of my time was going around various offices. I often see ancient computers being used, simply because worked. I recall seeing 286s in both IBM HQ and Digital HQ, (both used to be sited near to me) even up to 2003. But the opportunity to make a sale is natural I suppose. Incidently, I'd be happy to upgrade to W7. But with a new computer, plus all the other stuff, I'd need a donation of a few hundred bucks. (Well a guy can hope!)

Its nearly 5 years since Windows 7 came out. I should imagine that even the idiots at Microsoft should realise; if a computer hasn't been upgraded by now, its not likely to be. The reason it's not been upgraded, is none of their bloody business.

I have Win7 on the same computer as the WinXP, but I use XP because Win7 is not sufficiently better/faster for me to transfer all my personal data. Alex

XP will be faster on an underpowered machine Alex, but Windows 7 is at least as fast if you have the poke. It was made for modern computers, they made a sudden change away from they type that XP ran on. Thats why XP ran for so long, MS were waiting for technology to catch up before releasing Windows 7.

When I bought my computer it had the power for Win7 and that is why I bought Win7. Is it possible that it also speeded up WinXP and that is why I cannot see much difference between the two? Alex

You dont give any computer specs Alex. Windows 7 will run fine on a dual core with 4 GB RAM, XP x 64 will probably run faster. An 8 core with 32 GB RAM and Windows 7 will beat XP x 64 hands down. Then you have all the internet goodies that just wont run on XP. XPs life is numbered on the internet, it wont be long when it just wont run the websites.
