I used a good little headset for recording and sound for ages. We have decided to try Skype for our overseas calls, but I am getting sound and no voice, the mic doesn't appear to be workign, but it was working last time I used the headset. Any thoughts? Should i invest a small sum in a new headset, if so which one? I think I would prefer a USB connection to messing about with coloured jack plugs.

Once logged in, click on Tools and then Options, the rest is really self explanatory. "Sounds and Video Settings" to setup microphone and Camera etc:

Plug the headset in and look in Device Manager, see if there are any yellow marks against the headset. It might just need the drivers reinstalled. Windows 7 is very good at installing drivers, but not all of them work and you need to get the correct drivers from the makers website. If the headset is too old, they might not have written Windows 7 drivers for it. Even if you bought it post Windows 7, it could still be a pre Windows 7 model. Lets hope that hasn't happened and you will be able to get a proper driver for the mic. Even if there's no yellow mark, it would still pay to install the makers driver if you can get it. If it dont work then, you will know its not going to.
If you have to buy a new one, get a USB model. They are much better and are not prone to driver trouble.

Just to add to what's already been said, on mine, I have more than one mic offered, though only one actually works. There's also a test line under the mic drop box. I generally make sure that is showing a reading.

there was the yellow warning next to the one device driver, so I searched and installed an update. I still have no recording or playback of sound.

If the yellow mark has gone and still dont work, bin it. Nothing lasts forever, its knowing when to let go and I think you have just found out.

This might be grasping at straw like my last suggestion but have you tried unplugging it and plugging back in again?
If that doesn't work then Ken's suggestion is probably correct.

I think unplugging was the problem. It worked, but I unplugged to try out a new headset with no mic. When I plugged back in - no mic.

Sorry to hear that stardust. I know how frustrating it is when something we've relied on for a while, stops working. Maplin have a nice range of these types of things. Even if you prefer to buy elsewhere, it might be handy to see what's around right now. www.maplin.co.uk/search?text=PC%20Headsets%20&%20Mics&page=2&sort=&productsPerPage=The biggest headache most of us have at this point is making sure we order the right connector. Most computers these days are designed for these things to go into USB ports, but sometimes there aren't enough spare ports or it may not be a computer. If you need any help, can you send as many details of your equipment as you can find? Basically, to identify the right plug. Good luck

New headset bought. Supposedly skype compliant. Still no action on the mic. I think there is just one little thing that is not set right.

Looks like I might have cracked it by moving the connector from a front USB to a rear one. It set itself up differently and away we go.

That's great to hear stardust. Not the crack, but you solving the problem.
If you find your old headset is still ok, suggest you keep it for a spare.

I need one for the laptop for travelling. I didn't mean a physical crack. Amazing how a simple solution often effects a cure. Thanks folks.
