I intend to buy a new PC and printer (from PC World) costing £400-£500 - for domestic use. I have/Wifi already (Netscape router). Any suggestions on what to look out for would be appreciated (PC deal would include a monitor)
Regards.

A better store? Don't know where you are, but here, there are several good quality computer stores selling better quality machines with great warranties. My own personal favourite is www.novatech.co.uk/ It's up to you though. As for specs, the fastest. the biggest amount of internal RAM. HD isn't as important as you might suppose, neither is graphics card in my experience. The pricey ones just break down a lot. Mine cost about 20 pounds. Equally, with sound card. Unless you really need all round sound, a decent stereo desktop card is great. Get external speakers though. Look for the biggest monitor you can afford. Printer. I use one costing about 40 pounds. Everyone will tell you somehting different. Ink price is generally high whatever you use, so suck it and pay, basically. I went for cheap since it prints letters well and graphics more than acceptable. More, when I feel like it, at the price I can chuck it away and buy a newer one. Extras. Pointless, especially with Windows. If you get anything decent thrown in, it either is loaded down with their own advertising or it's paid for by cutting corners on the machine itself. Personally, I never buy extended warranties. The legal warranty is 2 years. more than that is is added expense for little use. Most good computers are pretty reliable. Once they break down either it's cheap to fix or so expensive, you throw it away.

Prices might be a bit different, but all these retail outlets are much the same. I too like Novatech, they give you a choice of build within reason. They will also install your choice of operating system, or sell you one without a system. I build my own computers, but my laptop is a Novatech. I have souped it up a little bit more than what they do, but what I got was well worth the price. They deliver quick, you tell them what you want and you will get in in a couple of days.
