I bought a new 'mobile which is "infested" with Google apps that are pre-loaded and so cannot be removed. I am offered several useful applications, which only work provided I instal Chrome on my PC. I,d be very interested to hear of first hand experience with Chrome. I am using Firefox and, occasionally, Internet Explorer at the moment. Many thanks, Alex

www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.aspAs you can see, you have to go back to 2008 to see IE as the most popular browser. People finally realised being a Micro$oft product doesn't necessarily make it good and that there are viable alternatives out there. Microsoft have done little to save their ailing browser, mostly because it doesn't impinge on their profits one suspects. Firefox became the dominant browser for a while, but they forgot why they existed in the first place - as a light alternative to the full Mozilla suite and it gradually got more bloated with each release until people started looking for something lighter again. Enter Chrome and with the Google name attached to it, it didn't take long to dominate I first became interested in it when I found out you could have 'adblock' for it, because the main reason Firefox got popular was all the add-ons it had (has) to offer. I initially shied away from the sign in option in Chrome, but I now find it invaluable for keeping my bookmarks stored. It also stores my add-ons ('adblock' and 'click and clean') so they're instantly available too. Chrome is 'The' browser as far as I'm concerned, especially in Linux because it's the only way of using an up to date version of flashplayer - the versions for Firefox and other Linux browsers has had official Adobe support stopped at 11.2 which is fine for a lot of people, but useless for me because I play a few Facebook games which require the latest Flash. I don't like being forced to use Chrome from a freedom of choice standpoint, but as I've used it by choice for several years in both Windows and Linux anyway, all I can do is shrug my shoulders and think it could have been worse - like being forced to use IE !

I also like Chrome.
It's fast and addons can be installed or removed quite easily.
I do, occasionally find that my preference settings get 'lost'. Mainly, that I like to see the Bookmarks bar and it sometimes doesn't appear. Easily solved with a couple of clicks.
Minor annoyance really.
As for the endless extras, may I suggest Ccleaner? It has a tab where you can select some services to start and Google Updates is there to be stopped. Be careful though, some services are quite important. As always, if in doubt, don't and ask.
mikkh and vikingken seem to be the guys of the moment. mikkh since 1899 and ken not quite that long.

I find this topic quite interesting. I do not use Firefox purely because of all the constant changes and to persistent add-on's etc: I know a lot of people like Firefox and of course that is their choice. As some of you will know, I have been using Maxthon for quite some time and frankly I would not entertain anything else, it has all the usual features (and many more) some of which are drawn from "Chrome" and also Internet Explorer. Maxthon is FAST gives a choice of two engines and offers so much more without the hassle of constant frequent updates. It is also available as a "Cloud" version too. www.maxthon.com/?lang"Maxthon Community" is a useful source of info too. forum.maxthon.com/If one has more than one computer there is a facility called "Maxthon Passport" which enables one a 'synch' facility also.

It's not the easiest to customise, but a few minutes work and you could have this ... What's not to like about that?

Thank you Mikkh and you other guys for the frank views. Nothing like the first hand experience. I have installed Chrome on WinXP for now, but I am not used to it yet and because of that I feel more at home with Firefox. Chrome does synchronize with my mobile, which means that I can access all the "Favorites" saved on PC on the mobile as well.
Thanks again,
Alex
