Hi guys, the bad penny is back, long time no problems ( thanks to y`all )until now... Somehow I seem to have acquired this ruddy Babylon Search bar that comes up everytime I go on the internet,so its trying to open up along with my " blank" home page, resulting in both of them being slow to open, have tried various suggested "fixes" to no avail, trouble is it doesn`t show up on my list of programs when I go onto my control panel to uninstall, in fact it doesn`t show up anywhere. I would appreciate any assistance you may be able to offer.
regards copey

Download, install and update MalwareBytes AntiMalware. Reboot into Safe Mode, look for it in C:/ Program Files and if its there delete it. It probably wouldn't delete without being in Safe Mode. Then run MBAM while still in Safe Mode, even if you dont find it in Program Files. If MBAM finds it, you will need to reboot to get rid of it. After rebooting run C Cleaner to tidy up the registry.

Hi there, thank you for that info, have tried it but no luck i`m afraid, no sign of it anywhere in the program file. I will go through it again in the morning just to check I didn`t miss anything.
many thanks, copey

Open Internet Options in Conrol Panel. Wipe whatever is printed as the home page on page one and type in whatever page you want. I have a feeling its written itself into the browser and not the computer. The trouble is they are no longer a browser, they are an operating system all of their own. If is in the browser, you could try uninstalling it in Add & Remove Programs, Turn Windows Feaures On and Off. Reboot, run C Cleaner, turn it back on again. Open Intenet Options and set your home page.

Download the Free version of SAS select Custom Install, uncheck any Google toolbars etc it asks to install. Open the program (you will have to look in the taskbar for the icon to activate it on screen) update it and run a Full Scan. It should pick up Babylon toolbar by default.

Hi vikingken ..quote (I have a feeling its written itself into the browser) I think you could be right, I have temporary installed Comodo and then Fire Fox and it doesn`t show on those browsers,I could use one of those I suppose, but prefer Chrome, there seem to be plenty of fixes on the web, but I dont trust some of them, and they cost, I tried that SAS but it made no difference. Its a nuisance more than anything as it means 2 pages are trying to open at the same time which slows both down, went into Internet Options and put "Blank" into the box again no difference, keeps trying to open up with my Yahoo Mail.
Anyway thanks to both of you.

Nomally SAS wont find a Trojan if MBAM hasn't, but anything is worth a try. Trojans will install more than one instance, each deeper hidden than the one before. SAS will find the top one, but MBAM will dig out the other 3 or 4.
You could try doing a System Restore, as it seems to be more than just a common virus. Dont just restore to the suggested point, ask for more restore points and go back quite a way. It will mean putting all your Windows Updates again, but it should get rid of anything thats been written into the browser.
I know very little about Babylon, except seeing the download offers. I have not read anything adverse about it, so I'm flying blind really and having to suggest generalisations.

Picked this one up a bit late, but just for your future reference, Babylon is one of those apps that started off as a legit language translating application that was used in many other third-party programmes as an add-on. Sadly it didn't prosper as it wan't that good at what it was supposed to do, but after it was 'bought out' by CoolWeb.com in 2006 it became malware in its own right. For those of you who have been around long enough to remember, CoolWeb was probably the most intrusive and difficult trojans of the nineties to get rid of, and it seems that they haven't changed their company policies much since then! It doesn't show up in add/uninstall programmes (by design) so the way to attack it is to go into program files/Babylon and delete the executable file, then reboot and use Disk Cleaner to get rid of the shreds. If the EXE file won't delete, do a check on file properties and see if it's read-only; if it is, uncheck the box, reboot and delete on reboot; if it isn't, try renaming the file - something like poo.exe. (for recognition purposes, obviously!) and reboot again. You should then be able to delete the .Exe file which renders the programme inoperable. This procedure can be applied to any nasties that you can recognise on the system; some differ in some ways, but basically the same method will apply to all but the very worst of unwanted apps.

Sounds to me as if it's in need of a reformat and reload, Mate. Before you do that though, whip the bottom covers off, get the memory sticks and the HDD out and give it a bloody good blowout with compressed air - lappys are notorious for local overheating, and you'd be amazed at the amount of crap that comes out of 'em after even a few months' use. You might try adding a bit more memory while you're at it; it's fairly cheap ATM so it's worth doing for the improvement it makes. Lastly, don't be frightened of doing a reformat yourself; it's not THAT difficult, and if you're loading Win7 it's a complete doddle - takes you about 45 minutes, start to finish, and every step is clearly explained. The only ball-ache is installing all your programmes and apps after the reload - but there again, it gives you the chance to try new things and NOT put things on there that you ain't EVER gonna use! Give it a try, mate - even if it all goes tits-up, all you've lost is some time. Tek care.
