I keep reading about the next big thing on the net, Cloud. It's a bit difficult to form a reasonable opinion on this as I can't seem to find anyone will or able to say anything other than how wonderful it will be.
From what I understand, a portion of our programs will be held online, on storage facilities, as we need a file, the computer will automatically access them.
Now I may be wide of the mark here but this sounds suspiciously like the way numerous online games work. We have to store basic programs on our machines. These access a central server, on demand, as and when we need them.
The problems are these.
1. Server overload. Haven't heard of any means of overcoming this problem. You're in the middle of some important essay or writing an important email, or simply chatting to someone. A bunch of Americans come home from school and armed with their milk and orieos, log online. We plebs are dutifully pushed out.
2. Security has to become an issue. At the moment, no matter how big a game is, there will only ever be a limited number playing at any one time. The mods can usually spot anyone hacking. With Cloud, millions of people will be using the servers at any one time.
3. The Rip-off. This is where the real motivation for this comes.
Who will pay for the online storage? That's another monthy fee.
Who will decide when programs need (paid for) updates? That's a sure fire method of raising the occasionaly bit of extra cash.
With so much of our personal details out there, can we reall believe that there won't be some 'Targeted Advertising'? Spam in other worlds.
Cloud saunds like such a good idea. But so far, all I can see is the end of the net.
