This headline, on the BBC News site, reflects the sort of notions being touted by a number of news media and seemingly repeated by people in general.

A record implies it is being compared to something else. If I run, faster then anyone else, I might call that a record. But if I run faster then I have ever done, that is just a personal best. I could be running just faster than a tortoise.
So, I'm asking myself, why the hype.
Apple has good reason for the hype. Like any other company it is trying to make a profit. All power to it for that. But why are so many, otherwise respectable press outlets doing this?
This sideline, accompanied by a photograph of the journalist who apparently wrote it is very strange:
Yet no actual word on why that is suppose to be a good thing. There certainly is no hint of alarm.
Now, since most of my generation made complete fools of ourselves, in the late 60s and early 70s, with self perpetuating paranois about state conspiracies, (and I was a record breaking worst). we're not suppose to think too much about things like this.
But I can't help thinking we're all being mugged here.
On the plus side, I'm sure the powers that be know what they are doing and it will all work out for the best.

The company is turning into one of the most extraordinary cash-generating machines ever built, and just keeps on growing”
