OK, so Jeremy Clarkson is a boorish, sexist, idiotic upstart whose principal message is that there is nothing better than a car.
The problem is, he right. And it pains me to say that, as much as it undoubtedly does for everyone else to hear it. But let's face it, even with the astonishing price of petrol in the UK, it is still the quickest, cheapest, most convienent for of transport available.
Many of us have seen computer systems come and go. We've seen gadgets and ideas, bursting onto the scene, only to disappear later.
Apple is the latest must have. It's been around for years of course, always with the same message, They look good and don't get Virie or Spyware. Now, the world is waking up to the reality that they are flashy, there is no such thing as a virie and Apple are spyware. To their very core.
Added to that is the rather obvious restriction of limited available software. Apple users generally claim, through their gritted teeth, that they are not really interested. Like the lonely pasty kid with poor hygine, who can't get a girlfriend and claims he's not interested while hiding his stash of page 3 cutouts.
Latest paper tiger is Sony Playstation.
Basically, an expensive toy. Users splash out on something restricted to company products. Eventually, they discover that they could have had almost the same experience on a decent PC. Sony and others, try to maintain the illusion with endless new models and developing an online community.
There seems to have been a flaw in their online community idea though. A flaw so basic yet because of the hardware nature of the Playstation, was almost impossible to deal with.
Now, it's blown up in their faces. Some nerd has turned his talents to the Playstation and hacked into this insecure network.
So, even the most distracted teenage, junior, trainee, secretary can offer a few criticisms of the PC. But what the PC has, which none others do is adaptability. Insecure ports can be closed. Access can be restricted. Encryption can be endless altered, new methods endlessly introduced. More importantly, it can be added to, without actually having to throw the whole thing away and buy the latest model.
I doubt even our own resident whizz kids have never downloaded a bad piece of software. There's a load of it around and easy to fall for the hype.
McAfee and Norton continue to rip off anyone who thinks a name is worth anything. Even M$ allowed larger vendors to 'Brand' their OS, from XP onward, which essentially means including spyware as a bundle. (Yes, I bought a PC from PC World. Pobody's Nerfect).
But, with some basic common sense and following good advice, it's possible to get rid of much of the crap and there's more than enough high quality, free software that will not only protect most computers from all but the most determined hackers, it won't, really, slow your machie down in the process.
Which leads me back to Jezza.
Whichever way you look at it, the flashyness of Apple, the visual surprises of a Sony killing machine, or the bells and whistles of whatever, there really is, (not yet at least), anything as good as a PC
