No-one getting top broadband speeds in UK, some things apply anywhere. pa.press.net
No broadband customers are receiving the top download speeds advertised by internet service providers (ISPs), the communications watchdog has said. More than half of broadband users are on packages that offer speeds of "up to" 8 megabits per second (Mbps), but research by Ofcom found in practice they received an average speed of 3.9 Mbps - less than half of the advertised maximum speed. Ofcom said it was impossible for customers to receive the so-called "headline speed" of 8 Mbps, because some capacity is reserved for technical reasons. The highest speed a customer on an 8 Mbps package could receive in practice is around 7.2 Mbps, Ofcom said, and this is only likely if they live extremely close to the telephone exchange through which their connection is routed. Fewer than one in 10 customers on an 8 Mbps package received an average speed of more than 6 Mbps, and around one in five received an average speed of less than 2 Mbps. The Government's Digital Britain report on the future of communications and media laid down 2 Mbps as the minimum speed that should be available to all homes in the UK by 2012. Download speeds are affected by the technology used to deliver broadband and the capacity of the ISPs' networks, Ofcom said. Customers who get their internet through a standard copper wire - known as a DSL connection - receive significantly slower speeds than those on cable broadband. The report said customers on Virgin Media's "up to 10 Mbps" cable service enjoyed speeds over twice as high as "up to 8Mbps" DSL customers. Virgin customers on this package received an average speed of between 8.1 and 8.7 Mbps, or 81-87% of the headline speed. This compares with customers on BT's "up to 8Mbps" package, who, Ofcom found, receive average speeds of between 3.8 and 4.2 Mbps, or 48 - 60% of the advertised maximum.

Its a question that keeps getting asked and I thought that explained it better than most articles I see.
Showoff Larry, if I get 17.5 Mb I think I'm doing well.
The one point it doesn't take into account, is the drop you will get during peak times. It only gives the best you can expect, not when every man and his dog is online.

DSL and ADSL users are also in the vast majority, which makes me very happy I'm in a cabled area. I know quite a few people who have opted for ADSL (on purpose) though - mostly former dial-up users or people wooed by short term opening offers. I did a repair for my ex who lives on the edge of a rural area - her 'up to 8 Mb' is only a few times quicker than dial-up and extremely painful to use.
Larry
That looks like heaven, but it's the high upload speed that's the real eye opener - we get nothing like that ratio here - and zero ping, fantastic! And I don't even want to know the price, because that will make most jealous of all

Larrye gets 62.54 Mb/s. BLIMEY!!!! That's over 3.5Gb a minute so on BT Option1 you could download your monthly allowance in 3 minutes.
I have a 10Gb monthly download limit before extra charges apply and so far never even reached 80% of that (BT send an email if you reach 80% and haven't had one yet.)

Ken, that's one thing I failed to mention. That test was run at 7:24 P.M. local time which is most definitely peak time here in the U.S. of A. That makes it worth the $99.00 US that I pay monthly. It's bonding 4 channels and more or less gives priority to MY connection. That speed I posted is the same morning, noon or night. Needless to say, I'm in heaven. But, one minor glitch is that not all servers are capable of handling those speeds yet. For example when I try to download some test software from the Chinese servers I'm lucky if I can get 50kbps. About the only servers that give me those actual sustained speeds are from the big boys like Microsoft, etc.
The competition is getting fired up over here and now there is one provider that is offering 101Mbps downloads and 20Mbps upload. I'm sure my provider will soon be matching it and then we'll be on a par with some of the Eurpoean and Asian countries. That's about the only thing that our current "President" is pushing that I agree with. LOL

Thats the major problem at the moment Larry, slow servers. It dont matter how much pulling power you have got, you cant suck the DATA out of a slow server. Even with 20 Mb, I come up against that all the time. China have got some good fast servers now, but you have to watch out for nasties. Thats the big trouble when downloading from there.

Well, fortunately the servers I'm downloading from are from the developers of Maxthon, so hopefully they're not sending me some nasties. LOL
It's amazing how many people just can't understand the concept that you can only download as fast as the server you're downloading from will allow. They think that because you have a fast service you should be able to download at that speed all the time, regardless. I was surprised that the speed test at PC Pitstop can't handle the 50Mbps speeds. They are still giving me an error. LOL

They dont rate mine very good Larry, in fact they didn't rate The Beast very good at all. She should have rated better all round, maybe I didn't have her tuned right. I must tune her up and test her again.

You're going to love that 20Mbps speed. Show us your test results after you get it.

If thats a success, maybe they will invent a translator to help me communicate with humans. Sometimes I think I'm talking to tectonic plates, the gap is so wide.

I thought the idea of an iPad, was to be able to carry it round easily. Why anyone would want to carry an 8 kilo typewriter around as well, is beyond me.
