Hmm, the great Google paranoia syndrome.
Your ISP is collecting information from your surfing habits continuously and maybe already sharing it with Google for all you know, so in the interests of fair play and for research purposes, I'll try it for you.
The Linux instructions are quite annoying, because they assume you're using the over hyped Ubuntu - but luckily it's not that hard to work out for yourself.
I did two speed tests before I started and got my usual 19+ on my 20 Mb connection and then changed to the dreaded 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 nameservers. I also rebooted to make sure it wasn't using any old settings
# Generated by NetworkManager domain cable.virginmedia.net search cable.virginmedia.net nameserver 8.8.8.8 nameserver 8.8.4.4
I re-tested the speed - no difference, or too small to make a difference. It was actually slightly quicker on 'ping' times though.
The real test is in the browsing though - am I getting to sites quicker?
The best one to test is this site because it's often slow and sometimes very slow for me
Yes, much quicker and I tried it several times after visiting other sites first. I closed the browser and tried again It's not a fluke, it does load this site much quicker - and a few others I previously noticed weren't that fast either
I run several Linux OS's on this machine, so I'm in an ideal position to check this one (OpenSuse) I've changed against the others and I'll be doing that later.
For now it seems to work for me and I'm not really bothered about Google collecting my surfing habit stats

On Mikkh's recommendation, I've got it now.
Some sites don't seem to connect and I was hoping a different DNS thing-a-ma-jiggy would help.
Alais, no.
But it works fine otherwise..No doubt Google will fall asleep looking at my surfing habits

Not having 007 after my name, my surfing history doesn't need to be secret. I sure as hell wont support anyone who makes a career out of spying on people.
