Did you all like school dinners?
I absolutely loved school dinners. My favourites were the puddings like chocolate semolina, yummy!....pink custard....yummy again! I have found out how they made pink custard.....I have tried in the past to make it, but it has never tasted the same as when in school. Apparently it is just pink blancmange, but made like you would make custard instead of letting it set, so guess what I shall be making on Sunday to go with chocolate sponge cake, I can't wait
Did any of you have favourite school foods?

I hated school dinners. That's where I developed a life long dislike of cabbage and sprouts, they seemed to come with everything, even pink custard if I remember right. ;D I seem to recall a lot of Spam and Corned Beef, well, it was still the 1940s-50s, luxuries were still in short supply after the War. (Oh mygawd, I'm starting to sound like my Grandad )

I love Corned Beef Hash with onions and potatoes, definitely no cabbage, and now when I think about it, maybe it was Rhubarb with the custard. ;D

To make pink custard (or any other colour) just heat milk mix an appropriate amount of cornflour with water and add to hot milk (usually I tablespoon per half pint). Bring gently to the boil, but mind it doesn't burn in the pan, then add colour and flavour to taste.

I was a menu monitor at secondary school. This entailed writing the choice of menu on a blackboard so it could be read as the school entered the dining room.
I found if I exaggerated the cook's skills and talents I could be in with a good chance of seconds, with no questions asked!
A typical menu would read thus:
==================
Delicious Soup of the Day
--------------------------------
Mouth Watering Macaroni Cheese with Plum Tomatoes and Mashed Potatoes
---------------------------------
Spicy Beef Curry with Rice and Nan Bread
----------------------------------
Sensational Spam Fritters with Chips and Beans
-----------------------------------
Dessert
Everyone's Favourite!
Spotted thingy and Custard
------------------------------------
Rice Pudding
------------------------------------
Upside Down Pineapple Sponge
-------------------------------------
Bon Appetit

This is censorship gone mad! Spotted Thingy and Custard indeed! That wasn't what I wrote! It sounds obscene now! I remember getting kicked out of a chat room because a guy called Rooster came in and I said "thingy a doodle doo!" (I wonder what that will get changed into? "Thingy Doodle Doo?") Thought so! hehe

LR. If you read the ingredients on a blancmange packet, or read a recipe, you will find the ingredients are the same as I would use. You can buy bottles of suitable flavours in any good grocery store, cookshop or health food outlet.

Oh I loved school dinners especially the hot custard and sponge puddings I was always in the extras queue I was a skinny child so the dinner lady always gave me an extra big helping. Also farola pudding I didn't like semolina it looked like semolina but had a different taste I've not seen that anywhere since my school days. Oh now I have a craving for farola does anyone remember that and know how to make it

Nope never heard of Farola. Found this...
Farola Pudding.
3 ozs. Farola, 4 gills milk or nut cream milk, 2 eggs, sugar, flavouring. Smooth Farola to a cream with a little of the milk. Put remainder on to boil and pour over Farola in basin, stirring the while. Return all to saucepan, and cook gently for a few minutes. Beat up eggs with sugar, remove Farola from fire, and add, also flavouring. Pour into buttered pudding-dish, and bake gently for half-an-hour, or steam in buttered mould for 1 hour.
It seems to be fine semolina which you can buy from Asda/Sainsbury...
Let us know if you do make some and if it was tasty
PS gills of milk...googled one Gill = quarter of a pint

I loved school dinners, especially if I was on last sitting - and you got chance to do your Oliver bit My favourite was Goulash, although I doubt if it was a very authentic recipe they used. Tasted good at the time though We always had a choice of dinners and puddings, and the sweet that always intrigued me was 'cheese and biscuits' which was basically two cream crackers, a little mini butter bar and a lump of mild cheddar. I didn't pick that very often because it wasn't filling enough, but on last sitting I'd always have one when they were asking who wanted more (I always wanted more!) I remember as a youth buttering 12 slices of bread (to start with) when were having chips - not that we had them that often, because my mother knew about balanced diets long before it became fashionable I had a favourite pudding but my mind is playing tricks with me. I can't seem to recall if it was one my mother did, or one I had at school. I never liked the cornflake tart one that much, but most kids seemed to love it. One of the ones I know my mother did quite often, was apple cake - because my Granny had a mini orchard in her massive back garden and we were never short of fruit (me and my 5 siblings) She used to mix apples and pears and layer them on sponge cake (not out of a packet crap - real sponge cake) that was about an inch thick and sprinkled it with brown sugar - fantastic and served with real custard She used a special cake tin that was two foot square and though I've tried to make it myself, being a half decent cook, I can never get it perfect like she did with the cake all solid and the fruit just right - happy and well fed days )

The pig man who came to empty the pig bins, use to bring us buckets full of raspberry jam. So we always had loads of jam on the tables. We had pink custard, pink rice puddy, pink tapioca, pink semolina and you could have pink gravy if you wanted it. We used to chuck raspberry jam on everything. Cant stand the stuff now and to rub it in; one of the few flavours I could taste when I had radio therapy on my throat, was raspberry. Although when you cant taste anything else, it don't seem so bad.
