But why is it named 'New Zealand'. Is there an 'Old' Zealand? Can't seem to find a definitive answer. Did the Dutch navigator Abel Janszoon Tasman name it after the province of Zealand in 1642, and why didn't Captain Cook rename it with a British name.
Lots of speculation on Google Quote: Yet the real answer is less simple, and it is tantalising that even modern historical research leaves an area of uncertainty as to the first use of the name New Zealand.

Captain Cook did rename it New Zealand. It was Neue Zeeland before that.

Hi geminstar I'm from UK but now in Reporoa between Taupo and Rotorua
New Zealand is named after an island off Denmark
Zealand (also Sealand; Danish: Sjælland; [ˈɕɛˌlænˀ]) is the largest island (7,031 km²) of Denmark (excluding Greenland, which is a Danish territory) and the 95th largest island in the world. Zealand is connected to Funen by the Great Belt Bridge and to Sweden by the Oresund Bridge.

England. Carlisle to be precise, and fortunately things have settled down these past few hundred years, or I'd be saying England, for now!
The Great Border City, anyhow.
