Scenario there are 13 pc's on a network is it possible to set up a dedicated pc that can monitor all the other pc's with regard to Anti Virus and Firewall Are there any decent programs that will do this my boss is talking about getting it set up with Bt but i said i would ask on here if it was possible I am pretty PC Literate but when it comes to networks ive got a try it and hope i dont make a pigs ear of it !....lol

The only way I know is having an antivirus on all the computers, the router has a hardware firewall and so thats taken care of. I wouldn't want to try what your going to do, 13 is an unlucky number.

When you say "monitor all the other pc's with regard to Anti Virus and Firewall" , do you mean the PC in question is simply checking A/V and firewalls are active and updated, or actually taking on the role of protecting all the other machines?

If you set up a server to host everything and then have 13 terminals set up via a multi-KVM switch, that would work as you require. The A/V etc., only has to be on the server, as the terminals consisting of Monitor, keyboard, and mouse, are only used to access the data off the server. If you are running a server just to store backup data, and are using 13 other computers, then you need to have the A/V etc on each one.

I think the idea is to have one PC not the server protecting the other pcs what it is, is we have a client on a course and he reckons he is a pc "expert" though i doubt that. On Monday he is going to present his case on how to go about doing what i have described im just trying to get the info in case he tries to baffle me with bull ! I reckon the boss is going to listen to his ideas as a way to pacify him as he finishes the course on Friday

They tried a lot of different ways to network the WEA computers and most were failures. To have Internet connectivity on all, they all have to have their own AV. They all save to a server and the wireless router gives them a firewall, but they never found a way of protecting them without an AV. I'm not sure how they have rigged the wired networks; but it must be similar to the wireless, as they are all running an AV. As Kev has said, if they are just monitors from a mainframe server its different. Those computers don't have Internet connection, although the mainframe might have. They only use information that the mainframe has stored from the Internet. That stops them chatting when they are supposed to be working.

If I am reading this right, there are already 13 computers, is that the case? If so, then each one can be networked through a 10/100/1000 switch from a modem/router, but if they all need access to the internet, then they MUST have an A/V etc installed on each computer, no if's, and's, or but's.
I have a syatem similar to this with 9 computers in the network, running through a Belkin modem/router, and a 10/100/1000 network switch into which I can plug up to 16 terminals.
Had I known how big the company was to become, I would have gone with a server case, and desktop terminals all connected to the mainframe. It is possible for all the terminals to access the internet, but in order for each one to get the speed they need to operate efficiently, the internet connection has to be a fast reliable business connection, which is heaps more expensive to run than a home service.
