I was of the impression that Index.DAT could only be cleared at start up (Windows XP) and yet I notice in 'CCleaner' the option to deal with this is listed if necessary each time one runs the cleaner. Would someone clarify this please!!
Thanks.

I think its only been added to the menu in the latest version version of C Cleaner Buz. Version 2.17.853. If it was in any of the earlier versions I have never noticed it. The latest version also cleans up the free space, but it takes a long time if you have big drives.

Ken - you are correct with regard to the version of CCleaner, but are you saying YES it does clean Index DAT 'on demand' so to speak. I also use Webroot Window Washer and that clears Free Space too.

The reason that some files are cleaned at startup Buz, they get removed before they come into use. Products like C Cleaner will clean anything that you have selected, but it can only remove stuff thats not in use and leaves the rest. A cleanup in Safe Mode will remove more garbage than running normally for the same reason.

Ken - that's more or less what I understood, thanks for your explanation, I will leave Window Washer running at startup too then. Checking in Safe Mode had not occured to me however.
Elvis - glad you found this thread useful.

Unless you have a double life as a CIA agent, the use of Ccleaner and Webwasher seems a bit over the top to me and must be slowing you down - I'd just use ccleaner. Well I use nether myself because I dislike extra software that only does what I can do myself manually, but I realise not everybody has the necessary knowledge, so these kind of utils can be useful as long as you don't over use them and have too many running.
A lot of people have perfectly adequate PC's that are crippled by too much software
