I have a 250GB USB external HD. It will not let me copy any files to it and reports that there is insufficient space to do so. Checking the drives properties via 'my computer' then right clicking on the drive reports there is 129GB of free space on the drive. I have no write protection on and have done a full disc check including surface check which came back as OK.
I only recently moved about 90GB of files off the drive to another drive so know there is space on there.
Any ideas?

This is not uncommon, but I dont remember anyone coming up with a quick fix for it MM. The only thing to do that I know of, is to transfer everything to a folder on another drive and format the drive. Then add your new files files to the folder and cut and paste the whole thing back in one go. It should then get written back in one block leaving all your free space at the end of the disk and not in pieces scattered all over the place. This is a problem with externals that defragging doesn''t seem to fix.

Hi MM
Are the drives the same format ?
Has the external drive been upgraded from Fat32 ? Try Control Panel Folder Options View Tick ' Show Hiden & Folders' Then go into the External Drive and see if anythin shows up
Course I may just be babblin on

In reply to question re formatting. No the drive hadn't been reformatted at any time, it just suddenly decided it wasn't going to accept anymore files although it was showing 129 GB free. I copied the data off of the drive and then re formatted. It now works fine. Conclusion, and i am guessing now, is that the FAT table was somehow corrupt and although there was space on the drive which displayed correctly in the drive properties when I action to copy a file across it received information {from the drive} that it was full. How or why ?? Thanks anyway. MM

LOL @ Mikk.
Unless I was using W98 or ME, I would have been inclined to format it as NTFS. I have got an idea that it might be using the 2 formats, that might get the files crossed in the first place. Thats just an observation I have made and there's scientific evidence.

Ahead of you there.....it is now NTFS. It came pre formatted and has worked faultlessly for the last couple of years so the mystery may now never be solved.
