Been looking at some available. Eventually found one that has really impressed me. Hypercam www.tomsguide.com/us/download/Hypercam,0301-3292.html While quite a number of these programs run OK, after a short time, the sound is out of sync with the video. I tried Hypercam, recording a 45 min video on YOuTube. After 45 mins, the AVI file size was 2.3 Gb. At the end of the recording, the sound and video were only slightly out of sync, a few mili secs. There are a number of setting to play about with. Setting up the area to be recorded is quite easy.

Been experimenting with this today.
To get it to record sound simply set the appropriate sound recoding device to default. In W7, control panel, sounds, recording. It's a bit different in XP but should be simple enough.
In the AVI File tab, it strongly suggests using Auto Select for the Video Compressor. I found this was unsatisfactory and I got muck better results changing this by experiment. In W7, Full Frames (uncompressed) is by far better. But in XP a different codec was used and fine.
To change the area to be recorded, on the first tab, click Select region. A large cross opens, which follows the cursor. Put that on the top LH corner of where you want to record and click, then pull down to bottom RH corner.
Remember files will be huge so use Format Factory to adjust as appropriate.
Finding the file you've just made, click Open Output Folder on the AVI Tab. The foler can be changed, but needs to be entered in full.
Amazing piece of kit.
