This is an excellent idea.
Finally, something useful to do with a smartphone.

At a price, £40 a switch - that can soon get a bit expensive

Well, there's that. But anyone with the cash to burn on a smart phone which seems primarily intended to assist you to spend cash on whatever is currently installed, might have 40 bucks to spare.
The thing only switches on and off though. My Central Heating, for example, would need a LV switch.
After initial enthusiasm, it is a bit limited.

My heating turned itself off when it got warm and will turn itself back on when it gets cold. It does it without any having to be told by phone. I once went away for a week in winter, turned off the hot water and set the heating to come on in the evening to stop it getting too cold during the night. It cost me more to get things back to normal, than just leaving it alone. I set all my radiators to where I wanted them and have never touched them since. My hot water bill is not much more than the daily charge for the community heating right now and will gradually go up as the winter sets in. I haven't got any apps on my Blackberry and I certainly dont need one to run a bath for me.

Strangely ken, so does mine.
But I think the people making a fortune selling smart phones might not like it!
