No you dont have to burn it, nLite gives you the option to save or burn. So you save it the first time and then reload it add SP2 the second time and then burn it. You dont really need SP3, but if you want to add it save it again. Then do it the 3rd time before burning it. You can put all 3 in at once, but the program might install some and reject some and you have to start again anyway. Doing it my way works every time.

Thats good Elvis, I expect you will be playing with Linux more than Windows anyway. I would get XP SP2 on quite soon, as there are a lot of things that wont work on bare XP now.

It looks like you are going to have to slipstream a disk and reinstall the whole thing in one go Elvis.

Well i think i spoke to soon as it's not working today, all i get is the power light on the monitor flashing the computer seems to be working though, i will try it again later. The only software i put on was the stuff that came with the motherboard? just before this happen but i cant see that being the problem?

Well i got to boot up in to XP but it says i have a corrupted files do i want to repair the OS then reboot with my CD disk in and press R so i did and it will not see my disk so i will have to do it some other way

|

You have updated it to SP3 Elvis and it wont repair with an XP disk. Thats why you need to slipstream a disk. Otherwise you will have to uninstall SPs1,2,3 to repair it. If you uninstall them, it really will need repairing.

I would only expect bad file corruptions in a new OS, if it was on an old hard drive that hadn't been fully formatted. Bad sectors will cause file corruption. Yours is a brand new hard drive Elvis, so you would have to be very unlucky to get a dodgy HDD. You could try doing a File Check from C: Properties, reboot and tick both repair boxes. You need to be booted to do that, but you might be able to get it booted in Safe Mode. There is something not quite right with your computer, that I cant see from here. Try another DATA cable on the HDD if you have got one.

H! KC, Yes it's a new SATA Seagate H/D so it should be ok i have lots programs that can tell me if it's OK or not so i will give them a go tomorrow. I also think it is possible it is the motherboard it's an MSI motherboard (i hate MSI motherboards i always get trouble with them )

I've got 4 Tb of Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 SATA II on this machine Elvis. I always stick with Asus motherboards, I have never had any trouble with one yet. I cant say I have ever heard anything favourable said about MSI. I think you have got something wrong that is so simple, its getting overlooked.
If you do decide to reinstall, make sure you do a full format and not a quick one. If you have got a dodgy HDD, at least that will tell you and you can take it back.

That rules the hard drive out Elvis. Run a lens cleaner through you DVD drive, polish the disk and I dont see what can go wrong. The only weak link in the chain, are the DATA cables.

H! KC,
Well i did a scan in xp using my Sandburg USB All-In-1 Hard Disk Link cables and connecting to my other computer and i do not seem to have a problem with my H/D so i connected to my DVD and cleaned it and i will put it back together later today and see if it makes any difference, at least thats the H/D sorted "A"

I know these drives are done up in antistatic bags Elvis, but I expect its possible to get a smudge on a lens before they are done up. Anythings possible, so when in doubt check everything.

Thanks Elvis. Keep me in the loop and let me know how your getting on. SATA is quite a sharp learning curve and any sort of information is always good to have. I thought I was going to have kinky cable syndrome with The Beast, but I have got away with it. Because the front fan is so close to the ends of the hard drives, the DATA cables have to be lead from the back to the front of the mother board. There's not a lot of room, or choice of how to run them. I guess the Japanese designers, got it just about right. I did have a sneaking suspicion though, they were designing for PATA not SATA.

Well KC that's the japs for you Well i have been experimenting a bit today i put the computer on and booted up in to Linux mint and left it running with the screen saver on, three hours later it froze and i could do nothing with the mouse or the keyboard so i shut down and tried to restart but no go i left it for one hour and rebooted three hours later it shut down again i have nit done it again as i have a water leek in my kitchen that i have to get fix will give the computer a go tomorrow Tuesday maybe. I am now thinking it's a over heating problem on the motherboard? what do you think?

Post by ken on Mar 17, 2009 1:17:18 GMT
It sounds a bit like a heat problem Elvis, although 3 hours seems a long time to go and I would have expected it to pack up quicker. If you get the time, start messing around with photos or something to warm it up quicker and see what happens. Or put an extra shilling in the meter and see if it goes for 6 hours. Make sure your fans are working OK and if you have automatic fan control, turn it off. You might need to put an extra case fan in, as SATA drives run hotter than ATA and might gradually heat the case up. That could be why it takes a while to freeze up. Heat is the most likely candidate, but why................. ? KC
