Very interesting, one thing I have found in trying to use the backup tool when installing Win 7 on XP pc is that the tool trys to backup all your drives in the PC. I only have 60Gb used on my C: drive and other partitions and drives where there is around 450gb used in total. The backup tool told me I had around 500Gb to backup. If this is the case then I will have to remove the other IDE and Sata Drives before using the backup tool to reduce the backup size and doing the Custom Install. Its not clear whether the backup tool will restore all my Email addresses old Emails in Outlook , IE and Firefox favourites I was going to backup my C: drive / partition onto one of my other Drives installed but it looks as if I will have to mess around with the partitions on my external drive to receive the backup.
I will not converted my XP pc to Win 7 until I am sure that I have done all necessary exports of mail and contact lists from outlook

Hi Lynnrose,
I am having a problem installing Windows 7 (32 bit) on my wife's PC which is networked to mine through a Belkin router and is on line. Everything seemed to be going well, albeit it very slowly, until right at the end, when the desktop appeared with all the icons, a blue screen with white text came up with a message that started "A problem has been discovered and windows has been shut down to avoid damage to your omputer." The screen then vanished before I had a chance to read the rest of the message and the PC restarted and went through the same routine again. So I restarted it in safe mode and got a 'Help and support' window which suggested that I try to start often used programmes one by one to see if there was a problem. I quickly found that I couldn't open Photoshop Elements 7 and going to the Windows Compatability Help website I discovered that there does seem to be a problem with this software thus; "Information coming soon. We are working with the software publisher to confirm this products compatability."
Can you help me with this problem please or, alternatively tell me how to get back to Vista, though in this respect I should say that the PC came with Vista loaded and without a disk?
Brian.

This happens with SATA drives Graham, the Backup Tool doesn't recognize them and thinks they are part of the C: drive. I had the same trouble while using RC.
I don't remember exactly how I did it, but I can give you a clue and you can work it out. I used the Networking Tool and convinced it my internal backup drive was on the network and it was assigned a different letter on the network. I used this letter when using the Backup tool and not the letter that the computer had assigned. Even now I am back using XP x 64 SP2, I still have a Z: drive on my network. If I click on it, it takes me to My Documents which are stored on my E: drive. I let my Belkin router figure that one out, its too much for my poor little brain cell.
Brian,
Sorry mate I dont use Vista, but I can see where your coming from. I dont think Micro$oft have got the upgrading quite right.
I'm going to be install Win7 over the next couple of days, but I'm doing a clean install on a pre-formatted drive. I don't know how its going to work out yet, as I had trouble with RC on The Beast. BETA worked perfect and I'm installing Home Premium, as it the lightest. If I get any clues as to what your trouble might be, you will be the first to know.
If CrossfireX wont work on The Beast, it will be going back to the same XP x 64 SP2 OS that its got now. I use Paragon 10 for my system images. Then I will be putting Win7 x 64 on my Acer Aspire laptop, which works perfectly with Win7 RC x 64.
Its all a game of Horses for Courses.

I found a solution to the backup tool trying to backup my SATA drive. At the end of the analysis it gives you the chance to modify what it has found displaying a tree of your system with all hard drives. I just removed the ticks against all my other drives only leaving the C: drive in the backup. Backup then reverted to just the C: contents.

I have bought the new windows 7 and had this in my study for several days now but cant find the confidence or the willpower to install, as I have been told to back up my files I have an ext drive but I dont know about partitioning on my hard drive or my ext h.d. and would appreciate any help I can get please. I can disconnect my ext h.d. that will surely save my pics but I am using photoshop and I cant do without it. I tried to back this up on my ext drive but it wouldnt allow me to do this! tia Ann

My Windows 7 DVD wouldn't read in my Laptop - solution I copied the whole DVD to a 4Gb USB memory stick on another PC and then used this on the laptop, clicked on Setup in the memory stick and it loaded OK - The first part of Upgrade actually copies the whole of Win 7 onto the hard drive so does not need the DVD or in my case the USB stick when it reboots for the first time. It took 2.5 hours to upgrade but at the end everything was working OK (DVD drive still faulty)
Tip if you are upgrading more than 1 PC then get the Family upgrade Windows 7 for up to 3 PCs at £112.60 plus VAT - (staples)

Oh forgot to say in previous - When you get to point where you enter the Windows Key take the tick out of the box to register now. Then if your PC is not up to scratch and you want to revert back to previous O/S you can do without the problem of re-using the Win 7 DVD which has been registerd to the first upgrade PC and MS thinking that you are trying to use it on a second PC.. You get 30 days to register so its time enough to decide if Win 7 is for you.

Just discovered this W7 trick posted in another place
Windows 7 God Mode Windows 7 God Mode enables you to have a place where you can get to all the settings without having to browse around and click through options and folders in Control Panel.
Add a new folder to your desktop and name it GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
After that is done, you will see a God Mode Icon on your desktop. This lets you adjust loads of W7 settings in one place.
Don't try this on Vista. It will crash.

Hi does anyone have a tip when running windows 7 64 bit and using the 64 bit browser which does not seem to support flash yet how do you stop annoying wee pop up asking to install flash. Just now if I want a page with flash on it I just use firefox or IE 32 bit browser but as the 64 bit one does seem faster I wondered if anyone knows a way around this.

The period does have to be there. ( Well it does with Win7 x 64 )
It works with both x 86 and x 64 in Win7. It works with Vista x 86, but not with Vista x 64.
You can write GodMode any way you like, but the second part .{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} has to be exactly as its written here.
It should also work with Windows Server 2008 x 32.
If you want to delete the folder, it has to be done in Safe Mode.

I haven't found a way round that Flash Popup yet Lazy, except to use the 32 bit browser most of the time. Flash works very well in the Win7 x 64, 32 bit browser, although there is still bother with XP x 64. Some non Flash pages display better with the 64 bit browser, most of the warning popups are only for adverts and not the page itself.

Thanks for the reply Ken well it looks like I am better just using the 32 bit browser just now. It is a shame really because it seems so much quicker in the 64 bit IE. I hope flash sort it out soon. ;D

I wouldn't hold your breath Lazy, Adobe dont seem to be in any hurry to sort out the 64 bit problem.
I agree the 64 bit browser is a faster browser, if only Adobe got their act together. Now 64 bit is becoming more popular and 64 bit software has started to come out, they might get some pressure put on them to overcome the snags. There is a lot of money in games and I think the games companies are being held back by Adobe now.

When I created a folder under WIN 7 Ultimate 32 bit and tried to rename folder by copy and paste the Gode Mode string into the name, it came up with error saying full stop not allowed in names. I just set the Folder name to GodMode then renamed it and added the string without the full stop and it worked OK.
I then created a Godmode folder on my laptop running WIN 7 home premium 32 bit using full string including full stop without a problem.
Sorry if my previous post caused a problem

On XP, the search function allows you to search for all photos.
There doesn't seem to be a dedicated search function on W7. Only a single line box.
Any way to search for photos on the whole HD?

Yes sort of although you can't search for "photos" or "pictures" you can search by file extension. e.g. to find all jpegs type *.jpg into the search box and it will find every jpeg on your computer it you can save the search as well of course this will work for any file type.

Thanks Lynrose and martytoo.
A friend has Windows 7 and says she has lost her photos. Sadly, when I asked her about the extensions she replied, 'What's that?'
