Wine proggram to RUN Windows Tools?
« Thread Started on Jan 31, 2009, 4:19pm »

I read a letter in Computer Active saying how the writer downloaded this Wine program that runs Windows Tools in Linux.
Typed the name in Google and all of the sites quoted gives the following warning. This site may harm your computer.
Seems a bit strange to me, Whats it :-[ all about??

This is the offical 'Wine' site

http://www.winehq.org/

and it's definitely not harmful to your computer in Windows or Linux

Wine is pre-installed in a lot of distros already, but if it isn't, just type 'wine' in the search part of the package manager and install it that way.

It's not the easiest of programs to use in it's default state and you may find these third party applications are needed to run it successfully

http://wiki.winehq.org/ThirdPartyApplications

'Wine Doors' in particular is very good

as is 'crossover' but that's a commercial program, with it's main focus being on running MSOffice inside Linux - which it does very well if you can't get on with OpenOffice.

Didn't you click on the link?........the message you were getting "This site may harm your computer" was because...

Millions of internet users around the world have been affected by a major technical fault in popular search engine Google today.

The glitch meant that all search results were incorrectly flagged as potentially dangerous to the user's computer.

What a turn around! After reading mikkh's comments I went ahead, and now have 'wine' and one or two more add-ons installed.

This was made easy by reading from the Linux Guide (Comp/Active), you don't even have to download anything, the program takes care of that and it's all installed without switching off and restarting. Amazing, :) Westy

It's a decent program with a bit limited scope though, as would be expected from a software emulator. But it can do some pretty neat tricks.

If you want more functionality, running a 'virtual' copy of Windows inside Linux is your next option

http://www.virtualbox.org/

You can also do it the opposite way round i.e run a virtual Linux system inside Windows, but I prefer the Linux way, as it's faster and more secure.

The advantage of doing it the 'virtual' way, is that it's a real full install of Windows you're running, so everything works
